Dear Best Friend
Spoken word performance in NJC Localmotif 2018
by Anna and Andrea
Dear best friend,
I’m sorry we fought,
I’m sorry I snapped.
I’m sorry I was impatient.
I’m sorry I couldn’t be happy enough for you,
Sorry is just a word, a pathetic meaningless word,
But I have honesty and truthfully
My depression,
It creeps up to me like an assassin in the shadows,
It is merely a catalyst for all the words I vomit onto you,
Being with you was lonely,
But being without you was boring.
Don’t you see,
My anxiety is different,
Do you know what I’m anxious about?
I’m anxious that you’ll leave me for someone,
More deserving of your time.
My plunge into my insecurities,
Only give you time to swim away.
When you’ve reached the shore, you’ll see.
That the person who you’re happiest with,
Is not me.
Sometimes I do wonder,
When I ask you questions,
Am I more afraid of the echo of silence,
Or the answer I will receive.
But don’t you understand?
You can’t expect so much from me,
We crave perfection in the deepest of crevices,
But to crave that from me
Is simply selfish,
For I am not perfect and neither are you.
but you,
You are a metaphor for society,
Society,
The cold unfeeling void that we will have to fill, As humans,
As slaves to the corporate city.
You have represented, how we
Are forced to grow up so fast,
The innocence we see as we run into the city’s neon lights,
Now replaced by fear and paranoia.
You have shown me how to candy the bad,
And only the evil in people around me,
You have changed me for the worse,
Thank you for that.
Yours,
Anna & Andrea
